[wplug-erie] What do you use Linux for?

First, Grey thanks for asking the 'right' question; you must be good
at parties. Now we can get to know each other, in some sense.

As to Linux, I began as a MAC user. When I went to grad school (math)
the department was predominately UNIX (Dec and Sun). Most of the grad
offices has pcs with windoze 95, my initial migration to linux was for
philosophical reasons. Open source embraces a similar philosophical
stance with academic research (standing on the shoulders of giants,
don't reinvent the wheel, etc...).

I have in more recent years come to dislike 'the enemy' for their
ruthless tactics, limitless arrogance, and what the future of
computing looks like if they continue to dictate to the government
(digital rights etc...) See, there I am mono logging... (sorry)

I exclusively use linux, on several different desktops; no exotic
hardware - just random parts tossed together. Grey, I will follow
your lead and stay away from the distro discussion. I suppose we can
save that discussion until we have beer glasses separating us
(however, i am interested in hearing some reactions to different
distros).

Finally, i use linux for:
* Math research (xppaut, AUTO, matlab, maple [last two not open source])
* LaTeX ( i use latex for any printed materials; letters - papers)
* emacs user - i realize this is arguably more inflammatory than the
distro issue
* Web work (html, php, some mySQL)
* Learning, breaking and learning some more
* Admin a Server at work (soon to expand this role).
* Programming (not that much recently, some C++ and Perl).
* All the day to day routine: email, web browser
* For playing: I use gimp - i have never been interested in gaming
* I largely work from the command prompt

Who is next?

roger
