I think make deinstall only works if you have not yet done a "make clean" 
on the install directory in the ports system. If you have already done 
the "make clean" you should still be able to use pkg_delete to get rid of 
CUPS.

I have had excellent results from apsfilter on FreeBSD 4.8 and 4.9.
