Might be a good idea to lock the tables as they are being backed up. Of course if you are for certain no-one is editing anything using mysql then it would not be needed. Just a good measure for backups. Also seems you are doing full backups. It may be a good idea to conserve space and so on to do incremental backups or link to a amanda backup server to do all of this for you.
