The first InstallFest of 2007 will be held on February 10th, 2007 from 10am to 3pm at Carnegie Mellon University, Newell Simon Atrium. An installfest is an interactive event where you bring your computer to either show off some neat aspect of Linux, or seek help about getting Linux running on your hardware.
Possible Topic Ideas
As with the November 2005 installfest, we'd like to have a theme for this installfest. So, post your ideas here:
- Linux so easy Grandma could use it
Find easy ways to get people started. OpenOffice, Picasa or F-Spot etc. First person to mention writing udev rules or needing to write a shell script for something will be smacked.
- Show off your peripherals
Folks could bring in interesting peripherals, DV cameras, Wii remotes, tape changers, etc, and show them working with Linux.
- Games, Games, Games!
A little bit of Lan Gaming, both with open and proprietary games (Doom, RTCW, etc)
- Free/Open replacements for common proprietary software
Rich Burridge of sun has put together a list of freeware replacements for common proprietary programs. He's from Sun, so you'll have to forgive him mixing freeware and open source. They do that all the time.
We'll then bounce the ideas on the plan list to get going.
I'd like help with
If you're going to be installing a particular piece of software and would like help with it, put your name on this list.
I can help with
If you can help out with a particular piece of software that you think other people may be installing, put your name on this list.
- MythTV - Patrick Wagstrom
I'm going to show off
If you've got a particular setup, peripheral, or application that you're planning on showing off at the installfest, put your name on this list.
- Nintendo Wii Remotes controlling Linux applications - Patrick Wagstrom
